The forthcoming Annual Meeting of CARA is to be hosted by the Center for Medieval and Renaissance Studies at the Ohio State University. The dates are October 1-3, 2009. The conference hotel will be the Hampton Inn and Suites (501 N. High Street Columbus) which is conveniently located halfway between the OSU campus and downtown Columbus. There will be an opening reception at OSU’s downtown Urban Arts Space, which at that time will be hosting an international exhibition titled “Breakthrough Ideas in Global Glass,” and there will be an excursion on the final day to the “Great Circle Earthworks” at Newark. This circle, nearly 1200 feet in diameter, was built by the Hopewell culture approximately 2000 years ago and was used as a vast ceremonial center.
For those not involved in the Executive Committee Meeting, there will be a variety of things to do: OSU itself boasts a number of museums and among the sites worth visiting in downtown Columbus are the Columbus Museum of Art and the James Thurber House. The pedagogic focus for this meeting, to be held in our newly remodeled library, will be teaching the History of the Book. Discussants for the History of the book panel will be Patricia DeMarco (Ohio Wesleyan), Michael Johnston (Purdue), David Mengel (Xavier), and Andrew Taylor (University of Ottawa).
