Course Description:
This course fulfills the GEC Arts & Humanities VPA requirement
This course provides an introduction to the types of objects and spaces that were designed to serve the diverse
needs of the various kinds of Christianity practiced prior to 1700. We will explore how such objects and spaces
served the needs of both the community and the individual in communicating belief, defining identity and/or
facilitating contact with the divine. Particular attention will be paid to analyzing the visual form of the images,
objects, and spaces in the context of the rituals and surroundings for which they were designed, with the aim of
understanding how they served their designated purpose and elicited the desired response from the believer.
