Course Description:
This seminar will cover selected canonical works of medieval English literature (Beowulf and shorter Old English poems, The Owl and the Nightingale, Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, selections from Chaucer's Canterbury Tales, from Langland's Piers Plowman, and from Malory's Morte d'Arthur), as well as some representative readings chosen from lesser-known literature (such as the Middle English Breton Lays). In addition to covering the primary texts, we will explore current critical and historical debates about such works through selected secondary readings. Students will write short response papers almost weekly and a long final research paper, accompanied by an oral presentation.
Prereq: CPHR of 3.00 or better, with a 3.50 or better in English, and permission of dept.
