Old English is the language of the great heroic poem Beowulf and many other works from early medieval England (circa 700-1100 A.D.). English 710 is a beginning course for students who want to learn how to read this literature in its vivid original language. No prior knowledge of the subject is necessary. The focus of the first few weeks will be on pronunciation and grammar, and in the last several weeks we will spend more time translating and discussing selected passages from Old English prose and poetry.
