Undergraduate Minor in
Medieval and Renaissance Studies

The Center's interdisciplinary undergraduate minor is designed to offer students an introduction to both the culture of the Middle Ages and the Renaissance and the tools required to pursue more advanced study of these periods in a wide range of disciplines. By studying medieval and Renaissance society, students learn about those centuries that witnessed the end of the ancient world and the formation of the modern and that are fascinating in their own right for the culture and achievements they produced. Through their work in this program, students develop language and analytical skills as well as an appreciation for this period. In addition to the traditional option of pursuing a major in medieval and Renaissance study, the minor program serves those students who wish to learn more about this period while the prepare for careers in other fields. The minor program would allow such students to acquire some training in areas of interest outside their primary fields and to receive formal recognition of that training.

Requirements of the Minor Program

In addition to the general ASC requirements for minor programs, the minor in Medieval and Renaissance Studies will have these additional requirements.
Students will complete a minimum of twenty-five credit hours in courses that meet the following distribution criteria:
  1. Courses must be selected from the Center's list of approved courses.
  2. Courses must be offered by departments other than the department of the student's major.
  3. Course must be chosen from the list of approved courses by category according to the following credit hours:
    • 10 hrs....Center courses
    • 5 hrs......Text-based courses
    • 5 hrs......Civilization courses
    • 5 hrs......Arts courses
  4. At least fifteen credit hours must be taken in courses at the 400-level and above; ten credit hours may be at the 200- or 300-level.
  5. Credit for individual-study courses may not exceed five hours.

In addition, C.M.R.S. produces an on-line Course Listing describing courses in the medieval and Renaissance area every quarter in time for pre-registration.
