"The Artist as Translator of the Roman de la Rose"

Friday, November 16, 2007, 2:30 p.m.
Science and Engineering Library, Room 090

The Roman de la Rose has been called “the most widely read, imitated, admired and debated work” of the Middle Ages. Based on her study of more than 7,000 illustrations in the 326 extant manuscripts of the Rose, Professor Meradith McMunn will demonstrate how medieval artists translated the poem into richly varied images, modifying the tone and conditioning the interpretations available to readers of each distinctive manuscript.
