Description
Newhouse Fellowships are open to both junior and senior faculty members at institutions other than Wellesley College. In addition to salary-replacement stipends of $50,000, Newhouse faculty fellows will receive up to $5,000 in research support. It is expected that external faculty fellows will combine their Newhouse Center Stipends with support from other granting agencies or their home institutions.

The Susan and Donald Newhouse Center for the Humanities at Wellesley College was established by a generous gift from Susan and Donald Newhouse in 2004. The Newhouse Center aims to promote excellence and innovation in humanistic studies. When renovations are completed in the spring of 2006, the Newhouse Center will occupy a central space in the Wellesley campus and will host eight to twelve resident fellows each year post doctoral fellows, Wellesley faculty members on sabbatical, and visiting scholars from other institutions.

Resident fellows will devote themselves primarily to their own research, but will also participate actively in the intellectual life of the institution, meeting with one another at weekly lunch meetings, sharing their work in progress with one another and with the Wellesley community at large, and serving, if they choose, as mentors to student research assistants. Resident fellows will be expected to live within reasonable commuting distance of Wellesley College and to make the Newhouse Center their primary workplace for the term of the residency.

Applicants should submit by February 15, 2006 1) a research proposal of no more than 1250 words describing the project and plan of research for the proposed residency. A brief bibliography may be appended. Applications should also include 2) a curriculum vitae, 3) the names and contact information of three references, and 4) a cover letter that makes clear the applicant’s reason for wishing to work at the Newhouse Center. Applications may be submitted by mail to The Newhouse Center for the Humanities, attn: Debra Carbarnes, Wellesley College, 106 Central St., Wellesley MA 02481-8203 or as email attachments to nch@wellesley.edu"
