Abstract:
One of the most obvious features of modern publishing is the resurgence of magic-oriented young-adult fiction, in the works of Rowling, Pullman, Wynne Jones, with behind them the older figures of Lewis, Tolkien, and Charles Williams. This lecture will compare and contrast the different views taken of magic, pointing out that behind them, and perhaps energizing them, there is a long intellectual debate about the place of magic between science and religion, going back at least to J.G. Frazer’s Golden Bough.
