Reduce, Reuse, Recycle: The Life Cycle of a Book

The life of a book is far from static. The materials that compose books have histories, and the journey they go through from paper to product to people and back again can be unusual. Why was vellum used for the leaves of a book instead of paper? What is the purpose of filling up the pages of someone else’s book with your own personal thoughts? What did producing the same book in different-sized formats achieve? This exhibit explores the transformations involved in the production of early modern books and the reader’s role in reducing, reusing, and recycling books.

Join us in Thompson Library 150 on Wednesday, December 17th from 2-4 p.m. for a pop-up exhibit curated by the students in Medieval and Renaissance Studies 5611 (History of the Book). This exhibit will feature materials from the Rare Books and Manuscripts Library’s collection. Attendees will have the opportunity to view and examine books produced in a variety of sizes, composed of unique materials, and filled with marginalia.
