Magic & Witchcraft Film Series: "Spirited Away"

Wed, September 30, 2026
7:00 pm - 9:30 pm
180 Hagerty Hall

The annual film series is back and it’s all about magic and witchcraft! This semester, we're focusing on magic and witchcraft to align with our CMRS undergraduate GE course of the same name (MedRen2666). Join us on select Wednesdays for classic films exploring the consequences of living in a world where magic can influence people’s lives. Sometimes comic, sometimes terrifying, sometimes just wildly enchanting; these films ask us to imagine “what if?” and take the resulting answers seriously. All films will be followed by a brief talk and Q+A.

Movies are at 7:00 pm on Wednesday nights in 180 Hagerty Hall. Pizza and refreshments will be served. These screenings are free and are open to all.

This month will feature Spirited Away (2001). Directed by Hayao Miyazaki, Spirited Away follows ten-year-old Chihiro Ogino (voiced by Rumi Hiiragi in the Japanese original and Daveigh Chase in the English dub) as she accidentally wanders into a surreal spirit world where her parents are transformed into pigs. To survive and save her family, Chihiro takes a job at a magical bathhouse run by the tyrannical witch Yubaba (Mari Natsuki / Suzanne Pleshette). Guided by Haku (Miyu Irino / Jason Marsden), a enigmatic young river spirit who can turn into a dragon, Chihiro learns to navigate a bizarre landscape populated by creatures like the mysterious No-Face, gradually shedding her timid demeanor to discover her inner strength, free her parents, and return to the human realm.
