The Center for Medieval and Renaissance Studies has recently been named a recipient of a National Endowment for the Humanities grant, with a total of $159,005 in support of a seminar to be held next summer entitled “Printing and the Book During the Reformation: 1450—1650.”

The seminar was originally proposed by Distinguished University Professor Emeritus John King (Dept. of English) and CMRS alum Mark Rankin (Roop Distinguished Professor of English, James Madison University). With the untimely passing of Professor King earlier this summer, Professor Rankin will now take lead on the seminar, with additional guest speakers expected to participate. The grant was one of 238 awarded to scholars across the United States seeking funding for humanities projects. In total, $30 million worth of grants were distributed.

As is the nature of the humanities, the grant-winning projects are diverse in both subject and form; the grant categories include Digital Humanities Advancement; Landmarks of American History and Culture; Short Documentaries; and Sustaining Cultural Heritage Collections, to name a few. This endeavor falls under a category called Summer Seminars and Institutes for Higher Education Faculty and is to result in “a four-week seminar for 16 higher education faculty on the history of the production and reception of books during the Reformation,” according to a summary provided by the NEH.

The state of Ohio is home to three of the projects awarded NEH grants, with this the only one provided to The Ohio State University.
